Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-centered therapy that’s main focus is to heal the impacts of trauma through nervous-system regulation. SE is a form of therapy developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine to address symptoms of trauma and stress-related disorders. It's grounded in the understanding that trauma is not just a psychological issue but also a physiological one, affecting the body's nervous system and overall functioning.

The key concept behind Somatic Experiencing is that traumatic experiences often get "stuck" in the body, leading to symptoms such as hypervigilance, anxiety, depression, and physical ailments. Through SE therapy, individuals learn to reconnect with bodily sensations and processes to release this trapped energy and restore a sense of safety and regulation.

SE therapists help clients gradually process traumatic memories and sensations by focusing on bodily sensations, movements, and impulses. The therapy may involve gentle touch, breathwork, mindfulness techniques, and dialogue to facilitate the release and integration of stored trauma.

By engaging with the body's innate capacity for healing and resilience, Somatic Experiencing aims to restore balance to the nervous system and promote overall well-being. It's often used in conjunction with other therapeutic approaches and can be beneficial for individuals who have experienced a range of traumas, including accidents, natural disasters, abuse, or neglect.
